Show Up! Speak Up!

WHAT: Speak out on a new senior center in Spotsylvania County

WHEN: October 13, 2026, at 5:00 pm

WHERE: Board of Supervisors Meeting, Holbert Building - 9104 Courthouse Road

At the end of 2025 the Marshall Center on Courthouse Road in Spotsylvania County was repurposed and no longer available for community use. This left groups like the seniors and the Spotsylvania Women’s Club without a home - a suitable place for holding meetings, gatherings, and activities.

The Board of Supervisors are beginning to realize that we need another community center in the Courthouse area of Spotsylvania County to use. A replacement for the Marshall Center. A Capital Improvement Plan for a new community center has been put on the FY28 budget.

We want to make sure that this new facility is built to accommodate everyone’s needs, not just another small, boxy community center like the existing ones we already have. We need a senior center that is big enough to accommodate all the needs of the seniors, women’s club, pickleballers, etc. - a space with a gym, a large cafeteria, a decent kitchen, meeting rooms, secure areas for storage, and working AV equipment - a space similar to the Marshall Center. This space should also have limited use and not be available for rental to the community at large - a true senior center for seniors, not just another community center.

We would like to get as many seniors to show up as possible at the October 13th Board of Supervisors Meeting. An audience full of seniors speaks volumes! Wearing your Seniors in the Wild shirt or holding a Seniors in the Wild sign shows support of our cause! (Requests for shirts and signs can be made here.) If you are comfortable doing so, speak during the public comments part of the meeting. Let the Board of Supervisors know exactly how important a new senior center facility that fully meets our needs is.

Public comments are at the beginning of the meetings and usually happen in the first hour of the meeting. You can sign up in advance to speak at - https://www.spotsylvania.va.us/.../Board-of-Supervisors... - or just come out to the meeting and line up to speak.

Remember that you can call or email the Board of Supervisors anytime.

Come out to the Board Meeting on 10.13.26 at 5:00 pm. Wear your Seniors in the Wild shirt! Join in the conversation! Let your voice be heard!!! Let’s get a center we can be proud of!

Senior Center Update:

Wanted to share a brief (but hopefully comprehensive) update to our quest for a new, dedicated, senior center central to Spotsylvania County.

As you may know, several of us have been working behind the scenes since late 2025 when it was announced that the Marshall Center would no longer be the dedicated site of senior activities operated by Spotsy County Parks and Rec. The county sourced time slot availability at Lee Hill and Chancellor Community Centers for 2026, and created a condensed schedule of activities, as a workaround to not having a dedicated location. While it was important to show support for the efforts, we still pushed back and were able to get an additional location (Berkeley Community Center) and a fourth day of the week to hold activities.

We've now been attending activities at the various facilities since January 2026, and continued to work to expand the activity offerings. We have been VERY successful at the partnership with the County, while still pushing for more and more. We can be both grateful for the work we have done, and loud about the work that is still needed.

We also have been attending and speaking at Board of Supervisor meetings and communicating via email with those supervisors and more specifically, Berkeley Supervisor, David Goosman, to not let them think we are happy with where we are now. We are demanding a dedicated senior center central to Spotsylvania County, which means, in the Courthouse area near where the Marshall Center was. We have been advised there is a location already owned by the County near the Holbert Building on Courthouse Rd, we "just" need the funds for the building and staff/maintenance to manage it after it is built.

Supervisor Goosman found that there was a $3.5m fund appropriated for the Massaponax Water Tank that was going to be unused due to some EPA regulations that had stopped the project from proceeding. Instead of letting that money go, he proposed suggesting to Congressman Vindman and HUD that this federal money be reallocated to a community center replacement for the Marshall Center. That proposal was approved by the Board of Supervisors and in July it was submitted to the appropriate agencies/people. Unfortunately, due to the Continuing Resolution, this item is "dead in the water" right now.

BUT! Good news, the Board of Supervisors has already put a dedicated senior center on to the Fiscal Year 2028 Capital Improvement Plan, which means, even without the federal funds, this project is going to be a priority for Spotsylvania County.

Now, more than ever, we need people to get loud and get to writing. Contact your district Supervisor and let them know what a senior center would mean to you and the other seniors in your life. Show up to activities. The best way we can show how much a senior center is needed is to fill the activities at the locations we currently have. It’s all about demand. We have 40,000 seniors in Spotsy County and that number is expected to sky rocket over the next few years. But you would never know it to look at the participation at our current locations. Show up, bring your friends, and communicate. It is our goal to have a center that will knock the socks off of what we had before! This will take time, but we aren't going to give up til it happens. So please, have patience, have faith, and show up!

Board of Supervisors Contacts

9/1/2026

The Spotsy County Board of Supervisors has been put to task by us to bring Spotsy County a dedicated Senior Center (to replace the Marshall Center, but way better).

To make this happen, they need to hear from us! We have 40k residents 55+, but very few show up to Board of Supervisor meetings or write to the Board to voice their demands that seniors have a place to go during the week to socialize with other seniors.

The Board of Supervisors meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month and the 4th Tuesday of each month at 5:00 p.m. (unless otherwise specified) in the Holbert Building at 9104 Courthouse Road, Spotsylvania.  You can choose to sign up in advance to speak (3 minute time limit), or just show up and speak after those who have signed up. Click here to sign up.

Below are contacts for our Board of Supervisors. Please call and/or write to them letting them know what having a senior center would mean to you. You can find who your dedicated supervisor is by clicking here.

Additionally, we need to have every senior citizen in Spotsy County sign the petitions that we bring to the Tuesday and Thursday Spotsy County community center senior activities AND/OR contact Congressman Vindman to ask that he approve the Board of Supervisors' request to redirect the $3.5 million in federal grant money that was originally awarded for the expansion of the Massaponax Water Tank but now are experiencing delays, to a new community center dedicated to our seniors. Click here to read the resolution submitted by the Board of Supervisors.

Click the button below to contact Congressman Vindman and use your voice to get a new community center. (Sample verbiage below the button)

Congressman Vindman,

We are residents of and around Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Seniors, citizens 55 and older, make up approximately 25% of the population in Spotsylvania County, yet we do not have a building for our Senior Center; no one location where our active seniors can meet and engage.

Recently our Board of Supervisors proposed redirecting $3.5 million in federal grant money that was originally awarded in 2023 and 2024 for the expansion of the Massaponax Water Tank. Due to delays in the National Environmental Protection Act review process, the money was never used for this purpose.

We need legislative modification to get these federal funds re-routed to be used for a new community center for Spotsylvania County; a center that we are hoping to use for our senior community.

Please help us with getting these funds reallocated, and if possible, please point us to any other funds that might be available to us to use for a Senior Center facility in Spotsylvania County.

Thank you,
